Echo

A sequence memory game with real notes. Watch, listen, repeat the pattern.

Echo is a sequence memory game with a soundtrack. Six pads sit in a hexagon, and each one plays a note from a real recorded music box, tuned to a pentatonic scale, so every sequence sounds like a tiny melody. Watch and listen, then repeat the pattern. Every round adds one note.

It starts easy and gets long fast. Then the twists arrive: some rounds are muted, so you only get the colors, and some are backwards, so you have to play the whole tune in reverse. If you’ve ever played a Simon game, you’ll know the feeling of a sequence slipping away at note eleven.

Echo is part of Unrot, a series of twenty short games that each put one mental skill to the test: memory, attention, speed or logic. Twenty games. Zero brainrot.

How to play

  • Watch and listen as the pads light up one by one.
  • Repeat the pattern in the same order. Each round adds one note to the end.
  • A wrong pad is a strike, and the same sequence plays again. Three strikes and the run is over.
  • When the arrow in the middle flips, it’s a backwards round: play it from the last note to the first.
  • In a muted round the pads light up with no sound. Colors only.

Scoring

  • Your score is the longest sequence you repeat correctly.
  • Rounds cleared on the first try break ties between runs with the same length.
  • Play the Daily for one scored run on the same melody as everyone else, and keep your Unrot streak alive.

Tips

  • Sing it in your head. The notes form a melody, and a melody is easier to hold than a list of colors.
  • Chunk long sequences into groups of three or four, like a phone number.
  • On a backwards round, start from the end: rehearse the last few notes while the tune plays.
  • In a muted round, name the colors silently as they light up: “pink, blue, blue, yellow”.

FAQ

Is Echo free?

Yes. Echo is free to play in your browser on desktop and mobile, with no download and no account.

Is Echo like the Simon game?

It's the same idea: watch a sequence, then repeat the pattern, and every round adds one note. Echo has six pads instead of four, every pad plays a real music-box note so each sequence sounds like a little melody, and it has two twists: backwards rounds and muted rounds.

What are backwards and muted rounds?

From round 6, about every third round is a backwards round: the arrow in the middle flips, and you play the sequence from the last note to the first. Muted rounds start at round 4: the pads light up with no sound, so you have to remember the colors alone. Late in a run, the two can land on the same round.

How many mistakes can I make?

Three. A wrong pad is a strike, and the same sequence plays again so you get another look. After the third strike the run ends, and your score is the longest sequence you repeated.

What is the Daily?

Once per day (UTC) everyone gets the same melody and the same twists. Your first Daily run is scored, and playing any Unrot Daily keeps your Unrot streak going. After that you can practice the same run as much as you like.
